Nostalgic Seaside
Charm
Founded in 1999 by the consolidation of the towns of Long
Beach and Yaupon Beach, Oak Island is the largest of the Brunswick County
beaches and is easily accessible from Wilmington, Southport and Myrtle Beach.
This family-friendly community offers a nostalgic seaside charm and an
abundance of water activities including 65 public beach accesses, two fishing
piers, two marinas and three public boat and canoe ramps.
Just a short walk from the beach is the scenic Oak Island Golf
Club, a stunning 18-hole course designed 1962 by world-renowned architect,
George Cobb. The Oak Island Lighthouse serves as the area's most famous
landmark and stands over 169-feet above sea level. There is no spiral staircase
as found in most older lighthouses, but instead a series of ships ladders with
a total of 131 steps to the lantern gallery level. Oak Island also hosts a U.S. Coast Guard
Station.
